Ex-student wins legal fight with uni over exams Bernard Lane | September 01, 2008 A 27-YEAR-OLD former student has won the right to see secret examination papers after a David and Goliath struggle with the University of Melbourne, its top-flight barrister and specialist freedom of information lawyers. The university opposed an FOI request for exam marking guides from former finance student Zane McKean, fighting all the way to Victoria's Supreme Court, which threw out its appeal last week. The guides contain sample questions and answers that the university recycles year after year because it says the syllabus for these subjects - investment and personal finance - is so narrow it is impractical to set fresh questions. Mr McKean, now training as a financial planner in Melbourne, said: "I believe the university should be open, and I should not be obstructed if I wish to scrutinise how I'm being assessed."
