Senate holds public hearing on FOI Bill today

02.06.2008

STAKEHOLDERS canvassing the quick passage of the Freedom of Information Bill (FOI) are expected in Abuja today to contribute to a public hearing on the bill.

The hearing is being organised by the Senate, which on January 30, considered, deliberated and read the Bill for the second time.

The Senate later referred the bill to its committee on Information and Media for "further detailed legislative work."

It has invited all stakeholders and other interested Nigerians to come and make their inputs into the bill before its passage.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that some stakeholders had already started arriving in Abuja while some media chief executives had indicated their interest to attend the hearing and contribute to consideration of the bill.

Meanwhile, the debate on the bill has suffered suspension thrice at the House of Representatives.

NAN reported that confusion trailed the commencement of the debate on the Bill on April 29, as members were divided on whether to accept or reject the Bill.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that the bill was passed by the last National Assembly but was not assented to by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
