2011 May Be a New Year – But Texas Open Government Still Has a Way To Go
Congratulations to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times newspaper, its management and staff for an excellent open government analysis in and around Nueces County. However, as they point out 'Honest, open government is (still) a struggle.' Four years after state lawmakers made open government training for government officials mandatory, it's disturbing to discover that in that area only 8% of the governmental bodies reviewed followed Texas' Open Meetings laws over the past year. And, as Texas Watchdog has previously reported these violations aren't 'exclusive to governments in and around Corpus Christi.' In Central Texas, the instead of soliciting members of the public as an army of available eyes and ears around town, Leander Police Department apparently don't want local citizens to know about hometown crime. Yes Virginia, 2010 wasn't a great year for open government in Texas.
